The #BringBackOurGirls group (BBOG) has lamented the fact that the Chibok Girls, who were abducted by the Boko Haram sect for over 500 days have not been rescued and could not celebrate yet another Sallah with their families.
Speaking during the daily sit-out of the group, one of the members of the group, Abubakar Yusuf stated that it was unfortunate that Sallah after Sallah, celebrations after celebrations since the April 14, 2014 abduction, the whereabouts of the girls were still unknown.
He called on the government to make a strong and categorical statement that will build the military ability in intelligence and information gathering that will bring about the return of the girls whose families have not given up hope of beholding, one day.
The group also stated that the rescue of 241 persons by the military is also an indication that there is hope for the rescue of the Chibok girls as some of these girls would one day be found among the rescued.
“People are being kidnapped. Serious kidnapping are happening in the country. There is a problem because families of those missing do not even know where to report to. That is the reason we called for a missing persons register to be cordinated by the National Human Right Commission. We need the missing persons’ register. It is very important.
“We asked the government to work towards stopping the abduction of of its citizens. The abduction is still happening even when we hear about the victory of the military in the war against insurgency. It is rather unfortunately and we plead on the government to help us. The sect have deviced a lot of ways to torment Nigerians. They take over villages, they kill Nigerians through bomb blast. Something need to be done and fast.”
He also called for the incorporation of traditional institution in various communities to help tackle the problem of missing persons and insecurity in the country.
“We fail to utilise our traditonal institutions. There is no ward that do not have a ward head. We have traditional rulers, we have village heads and other traditional heads. Communties have contact with them. I think the government should allow those people to handle the issue. If they are giving this responsibilities, it will help. The government institution doesn’t have much presence as the traditonal instituitons. It will help a great deal in bringing to bare people who are missing.
There are lots of the Nigerian citizens who have been abducted before and after the Chibok girls. Even at now, we do not know there whereabout. It is rather unfortunate. Some security officials are angry about out advocacy. They said that our advocacy has made the Boko Haram sect to hold the girls with nobody knowing their whereabout. But what about those who have been abducted before and after the girls? What happens to them? The silence regarding the disapperance of the citizens is scary,” he stated.
