LASTMA: No Good, The Bad ‘Agberos’ and The Ugly Retired Commuters. By Makanjuola Kazeem

A political analyst, Comrade Makanjuola Kazeem laments over Lagos State Traffic and the extinction of core values and its fundamental responsibilities of establishment of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA).

Recently, Gov. Ambode Akinwunmi advocated the booking of offenders as against the arrest and impounding of their vehicles which was the erstwhile practice of LASTMA. With the new method of traffic management booked offenders go away with their vehicles but are expected to pay their fines and answer other charges within seven days.

Mr. Kazeem said, “Inarguably, the establishment of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) was at the time it mattered most and did successfully returned sanity to traffic laws offenders at its dawn of creation.

“But I must say that the commission lost its core values and its fundamental responsibilities, that moment a large population of ‘Agberos’ and retired commuters were recruited into the commission, all in a bid to give back to the "Boys" who were in one way or the other instrumental to the electoral success of the ruling party in Lagos.

"Perhaps, it will be better to completely take-off LASTMA officials out of Lagos roads and overhaul the commission, since they have relinquished their fundamental duties on Lagos roads and allowed avoidable traffic buildups on Lagos major roads, all because the Gov. Ambode Akinwunmi led government issued an edict banning them from arresting traffic laws offenders but to ensure the easy flow of traffic in the suburbs of Lagos and the City.

“The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme is running on that same track and will definitely hit a stationary obstacle in a time soon, if urgent steps to save the scheme are not taken.

He finally concluded that, “Truly, power does not corrupt but absolute power does".
