The #BringBackOurGirls group has described LEADERSHIP Newspaper as the pacesetter for the Chibok girls’ media advocacy, which other media organisations ought to emulate.
In a message of appreciation sent to the chairman of LEADERSHIP Group, Mr Sam Nda-Isaiah, one of the leaders of the group, Abubakar Yusuf, personally thanked the chairman for dedicating two of his staff and the Page 2 of his newspaper to the advancement of the cause of the Chibok girls.
Earlier at the LEADERSHIP Conference/Awards, while leading one of the parents of the abducted Chibok girls to receive the award on behalf of the girls, the leader of the BBOG group, Dr Oby Ezekwesili had also appreciated Nda-Isaiah for dedicating his staff to the daily coverage of the activities of the group.
Meanwhile, the group has again raised the alarm over the new video of the Boko Haram sect, which refuted most of the claims of winning the war against insurgency by the Nigerian military.
Speaking at the group’s meeting, one of its leaders, Aisha Yusufu, noted that though the government has promised to do more to tackle insurgency and rescue the Chibok girls, the incessant killings of innocent people have made it necessary for the group to call for more action.
She said, “If the government is not ready to protect people, the people will decide to arm themselves. It is better for the government to start now to protect its citizens. It is important they start now before it will become late. Citizens need to be protected.”
“The people have to be advised to be vigilant. Government should start to sensitise the people on the importance of vigilance. We should be vigilant everyday. National Orientation Agency (NOA) should rise up to its responsibility and begin to do that”.
She also urged the federal government to specifically focus on intelligence gathering and the use of advanced technologies in fighting the Boko Haram insurgents, noting that it is obvious that the conventional gun battle cannot win the war alone.
The group also said that if the Chibok girls fails to return before next week, it will be marking the one and a half year of the abduction of the Chibok girls on Wednesday, October 14, which would involve some landmark achievements to commemorate their abduction.
