The Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Hon. Leo Ogor, on Wednesday urged the leadership of the National Assembly to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and consider the possibility of a political solution to the ongoing travails of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

He also urged the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, to take a clear position on the matter and address the House.

Ogor (Delta PDP), in an amendment proposed to an Independence anniversary motion by Hon. Raphael Igbokwe (Imo PDP), argued that the legislature is the foundation of the democracy that is being celebrated at the independence anniversary, as the country did not suffer violence from the last general elections which saw to a change of baton between opposition parties.

The members of the National Assembly must therefore collectively stand to protect the institution, Ogor said and added that “it is our collective responsibility to protect the leaders of the institution...as a step down against this institution, is a step down against all of us. A stitch in time saves nine,” Ogor added, warning that embarrassing the legislature is a threat to democracy.
The proposed amendment as listed on the amendment form read:

“Mandate the leadership of the House to meet with the president with a view to politically resolve all outstanding issues relating to the National Assembly in the interest of Nigerians.

“Mandate the Speaker to intervene in the pressing issues and challenges being faced by the chairman of the National Assembly with a view to finding a political solution and protecting the institution of the National Assembly as a whole for the interest of democracy.”

The proposed amendments was passed by the members.

The House members also passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the National Assembly.

The resolution was contained in the prayers of Igbokwe’s motion which urged the House to congratulate Nigerians on the celebration of the 55 years of independence, and to urge all institutions of government to be guided by the rule of law.

The lawmaker also appreciated the role of the legislature in sustaining democracy in a friendly and tolerable political climate.

His prayers were passed alongside the amendment proposed by Ogor.
Hon. Aisha Dukku (Gombe APC) appealed that the independence day be dedicated to members of the armed forces who are battling Boko Haram terrorist and children displaced by the activities of the sect.

She urged the lawmakers to mark the independence anniversary with visits to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in camps.
