Mover of the motion of confidence passed on Senate President, Bukola Saraki, recently, Senator David Umaru has defended the action of members of the upper chamber of the National Assembly saying their action was to defend the autonomy of the senate.
Their action last week, according to Umaru, was “a clear demonstration of the determination of the National Assembly to exert its constitutional role as an independent arm of government that will not act as "rubber stamp."
Speaking in Minna Umaru who represents Niger East Senatorial district of Niger state said senators were empowered to elect their leaders from among themselves by section 50 of the 1999 Constitution and Orders II and VI of the Standing Orders of the Senate. “
‘The law did not say that Senators should elect leaders for a President or a party. Besides, this President Muhammadu Buhari had maintained a principled stand of none interference and is prepared to work with anyone who would emerge as Leader in the National Assembly”.
