INEC to test-run card readers in 12 States, Nigeria

Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will on Saturday begin the test-run of card readers to be used for the March 28 and April 11 general elections.
The commission has also denied an alleged plot by some Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs to pass a vote of no confidence on its chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, today at a scheduled meeting with the RECs.

It said the purported meeting would not hold because after the postponement of the February elections, the forum was no longer part of the events of the Commission.
INEC explained that the meeting was put off to allow the RECs coordinate field testing of the Smart Card Readers to be deployed for accreditation of voters on during the forthcoming election.
Speaking with Nigerian Pilot yesterday in Abuja, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, denied a report by a national daily (not Nigerian Pilot) that the RECs were set to pass a vote of no confidence on Jega.

He said the meeting was earlier listed to review issues relating to the successful conduct of the polls.
On whether the testing of the card readers was prompted by fears expressed that they might fail during the elections, Idowu stated that INEC is convinced of the functioning of the card readers.
Kayode disclosed that all the outstanding PVCs had been printed and were being distributed to the collection points.

Meanwhile, a statement released by the commission indicated that the field testing of the card readers will take place in two states in each of the six geopolitical zones of the federation and will take place simultaneously on Saturday.

The statement lists the states for the exercise as Ekiti and Lagos, South-West; Anambra and Ebonyi, South-East; Delta and Rivers, South-South; Kano and Kebbi, North-West; Bauch and Taraba, North-East and Niger and Nasarawa, North-Central.
