President Muhammed Buhari has described the death of former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as a huge loss to the state and the Ijaw people at large.
In a condolence message signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the president condoled with the Ijaw nation and urged them to take heart over the loss of one of their notable indigenes.
“Former governor Alamieyeseigha was well-loved by his people. This love was expressed in the way they supported him through his time in public office, and also, in the way they stood by him after he left office, in good and bad times.”
President Buhari also condoled with the family of the late governor, asking them to take the loss as God’s will.
Meanwhile, the state government has declared one week of mourning in honour of the departed first civilian governor of the state, who died on Saturday.
A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Esueme Dan-Kikile, said the mourning period commenced yesterday.
He explained that during the period, all flags would fly at half-mast just as all official government engagements remain cancelled.
“Government is working closely with the Alamieyeseigha family to give the former governor a befitting burial,” he said.
Also, condolence registers have been opened at the governor’s office, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, secretariat complex and Ijaw House in Yenagoa.
Checks indicated that the mourning period might force the flag-off of Governor Seriake Dickson’s campaign earlier fixed for Saturday, October 17 to be postponed in honour of Alamieyeseigha, who was the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state advisory campaign council.
